Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 Game by Nintendo Reviewed by Josh Nickerson joshnickerson@hotmail.com Size: 4 Megs Save: 3 Save Slots Released: 1993 Works with: All models Opening Snide Remarks: It's been a long time since I played Wario Land, but with the new Game Boy Color, I decided to play it again. And it was just as fun as it was six years ago. Gameplay: For the first time in this game, you take on the role of Mario's rival, Wario. Wario is ticked off because Mario has a spectacular castle. Naturally, Wario decides to go off and steal pirate treasure to earn enough cash to buy a bigger castle than Marios! This game is just like a typical Mario style side scroller, with blocks to hit, enemies to stomp and treasures to find. Wario can find special power ups that give him special hats that grant him special powers, such as flying and breathing fire. Graphics: Wario looks good no matter which system you use. The clear graphics are great even on an old model GameBoy. There are all kinds of cool special effects in this game, and there are even some nice cinema scenes. The back- grounds are well detailed, but not so to the point where they blend in with the foreground characters (like the DK Land series). Sound: The sound is your basic, Gameboy pings and buzzes. Not too much variation here. Music: When you first play, the music can really begin to get on your nerves and make you turn the volume down. After a while though, it tends to grow on you, even though you've heard better music on many other paks. The credits theme is the best track in the game. Play Control: Wario controls differently from traditional Mario games, but it is easy to learn. Wario jumps with A, barges with B and does other things with Control Pad and Button combos. It takes a while to get used to the fact that Wario can't jump as high as Mario. Final Analysis: Wario Land is a super fun game, which every GameBoy owner should have in their library. There are lots of hidden treasures and mini- games which should keep players busy for months. Wario plays pretty good, so Mario had better watch his back!
