World Heroes 2 JET Game by SNK/Takara Reviewed by The Avardancer Size: 4 Megabits Save: None Released: 1995 Works with: Any version of Game Boy **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: I like fighting games and SNK makes some fairly decent ones. Personally, Capcom is better in my opinon. Because Capcom was first and because SNK's arcade games bug the Hell out of me. It's just the fighting engines or something. Anyways, I found this game brand new for $15 at Kay Bee Toys.. so I bit. Why? Because... while SNK's normal games bug me.. the games that they made with Takara are pretty good. I liked King of the Fighters on Game Boy. I hate it on any other system. It's just me. I love SNK's PORTABLE games.. I can figure out why.. but I like them better. Anyways, on to the review. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: The game is set up like a tournament. You advance in the one-player tournament by winning two out of three matches. You never have two matches in a row with any of the minor characters. There are special "boss" and "mini-boss" fights to be had too. For the most part it's a "Tourney" sim. The "Training" mode is like an "Exhibition" mode in a Sports game.. you pick your player and your oppoent. Then fight. Now, fighting is fairly decent. The game has 17 fighters to choose from. Each one of them has a fair amount of moves. The fights are fairly short; because some moves do a lot of damage. If you memorize those moves.. you can always win in the single player games. I like how you can bounce a projectile back at the thrower. That's nice. But not as together as "avoiding" a projectile in King of the Fighters or using a special move to go right through it ala Street Figther 2 GB and Power Quest for Game Boy Color. The moves are easy to do and learn. I disliked the fact that -unlike Power Quest- I can't break out of a throw or throw people in the air. Oh, well. On occasion; you and your opponent may hit each other at the same time and no one gets hurt... which happens more than it should and becomes a little bit of a nuisance. Some moves just can not be blocked. A couple of the fighters have "cheap" moves. Those moves can not be blocked or countered and are EASY to do. In other games.. you can block/counter every move. Not here. And that takes a bit of strategy away from it. It's a fun game and a decent fighter; but it isn't Power Quest in terms of single player games or fighting engine. the text and events in the one player tournament are cheesy and ill begotten. Oh, well. It's a fun game.. but it's not the best. Now, the best part of this pak is the Two-Player option. Via Game Link or on a Super Game Boy. It's a fun game in Two=Player mode and all those little quirks from the Single Player game become your best friend in a Two Player match. Liked: Good Two-Player mode, decent fighting game. Hated: Mostly a lot of little things and the ending makes no sense. In fact, the ending is pretty stupid. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: Super Deformed fighters have a "kawaii" look to them. The moves are flashy and odd. The colors on the Super Game Boy are decent and the border is nice. Over all, there's no noticable slowdown and the game is fairly nice to look at. The backgrounds are a little sparse. Oh, well... the fighters are well done and have little details that are pretty funny. The fighters are an odd bunch. Very weird. I like the animation.. Rasputin's eyes bug out.. and that's funny. Some weird stuff here. Liked: It's easy to see and it's... weird. Hated: Not a thing. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: Average fighting sounds. You can tell the difference between a hit and a miss. The sounds are clear.. and those crowd whistles are decent. The music is pretty cool. It's not memorable like some games. It's just there. It's not annoying... some of it is pretty cool. But.. it isn't that.. well.. interesting. Liked: It's decent. Hated: It's average too. **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: This game could use an "arcade style" mode and that unique "Life Tug-O-War" that is in the other versions of this game. Or at least the death matches from the first one. Those made the arcade game fairly interesting.. although.. the World Heroes series isn't, in my opinon, as good as King of the Fighters or Samurai Showdown. The play control is responsive and that is good. Liked: It's pretty good. Hated: So much stuff could be done to make it at least above average. **************************************************************************** Improve: Hmm.. color.. more options, that "Tog-O-War" bit, Death Matches, and the ability to counter/block every move. Maybe some better character balance. RIYL: Fighting games. **************************************************************************** Final Words: Is this title worth your time and money? Sure it is. If you like fighting games. It's not the best there is.. it's pretty "average". But it isn't terrible.. like some Game Boy fighters.. *cough* Mortal Kombat *cough* If you crave to fight.. and you see it.. sure get it. But.. I would suggest getting King of the Fighter's 1995 or Power Quest first. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: **** Graphics: ***** Sound/Music: *** Play Control/Game Design: *** Personal Opinion: *** Total: 18 out of 25 Final Score: 72% **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: Scorcher Mode: When the TAKARA logo appears, press RIGHT, LEFT, A, B, Down, A, B, UP to access this mode.
