V-Rally Edition 1999 Game by Infogrames Reviewed by The Avardancer (Philip Wesley) Size: 8 megabits Save: Password Released: 1999 Works with: Game Boy Color ONLY **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: Do I dig racing games? Yes, I do. I used to LOVE Top Gear Pocket; but then I heard about this game.. and my love for TGP started to fade. Why was this? Well, I read the import reviews. Yes, I read every single review in this reviews archive. I've read them all. Some quite a few times. Hey, I even WROTE over 100 of them. Anyways, on to the review of this game. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Description: These cars fly. Or rather, feel like they don't have a lot of weight to them. If you hit a car or an obstacle/side object, your wheels will start to leave the earth. But over all, the game has a better sense of speed than "Top Gear Pocket", the cars are bigger, and actually real "Rally" cars. The game also has rather few tracks. There are three difficulty levels, and each level consists of two or more "countries", each country has about two tracks. So there is enough goodness to go around. The races are arcade style where you go from point A to point B, there isn't "laps", like some racers. The game is fun; although the other cars aren't much of a challenge. The real challenge comes from the turns; because the game has a loose feeling to it that's hard to ignore. Overall, it's fun for a while. No two player mode, or much to do after finishing exhibition. One that bugs me is how your car goes flying it if taps something. That's annoying. Liked: It's a fun racer. Hated: Speed bump! WHOOOMP! *car launches into sub orbit of the Earth.* **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: Overall, nice colorful graphics. Some interesting side of the track objects. There are even a few objects that are on the track. And you will flip over if you hit them. The cars are drabbly colored; but it shouldn't matter too much. The game gives a sense of speed. The backgrounds are nice and the pre-rendered cars on the car select screen are nice. The behind the car view is pretty well done. Liked: It's all good. Hated: Except for the drab car colors. Bah. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: Some nice music on the title screens, car selection screen, and on the track selection screen; but when you get to the actual race; you get only engine noise. :( I'm sick of engine noise. I want some REAL music to race with. Liked: Some cool music. Hated: Engine noise................................. **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: It's a pretty cool racing game. It is better than the original Top Gear Pocket; because it seems faster. Cars don't really grip though. :( Easy to control and fun for a while. Liked: It's fun and the play control is pretty decent. Hated: The car turns over on a lot of bumps; but you'll learn to avoid them. The cars are a bit too loose. **************************************************************************** Improve: Grip! Add some grip and fix up the car sprites. RIYL: Racing. **************************************************************************** Final Words: Pretty cool racing game. It's fun.. and it's fast.. and that's basically all I can say about it. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: *** Graphics: *** Sound/Music: *** Play Control/Game Design: *** Personal Opinion: *** Total: 15 out of 25 Final Score: 60% **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: To unlock stuff use one of these two passwords: "Fast" and "Food".
