Star Wars Game by Nintendo/NMS Software Reviewed by The Avardancer Size: 512 Kilobits Save: NONE! Released: 1992 Works with: Any Game Boy system. **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: It's Star Wars! I love Star Wars! I loved the movies, and I loved the toys. Man, I had the stuff. I had a Rancor that I had shoved a Yoda figurine so far down it's throat that I couldn't get him out. My dad and I battled with the large plastic glow in the dark "Light Sabers" until we broke one. Needless to say. The younger Jedi won. I beat the Dark Side. I had Jabba the Hut and a Walker vehicle and Luke Skywalker, that helmeted guy that I think is named Boba Fett. Anyways, I had the toys. I loved the toys. We moved... we sold the toys. :( I love Game Boy and I can not wait for the new Star Wars movies. I love the movie. It's just fun and amazing to me. And I saw this game for $15 at the Base Exchange Store. Needless to say.. I bought it. It took me a while to actually sit down and review the thing though. Is this game Bontha Fodder or is it akin to the Light Side of the Force? **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: To be honest... I was disappointed. The game is mostly a sidescroller. This wouldn't be too bad if it was an innovative and fun side- scrolling platform game. But it's frustrating and vague. The game follows the plot of the first movie. The game has a little bit of variety in some areas where you have vehicles; but those are short and dull for the most part. The game is a hodgepodge of gameplay styles and falls short on practically all of them. I'm wishing I could like this game; but the lack of passwords and the limited continues knock the game down a lot. It plays bad. Really bad. It almost reminds me of Home Alone. *cries* But, the game is decent enough to be tolerated. Other elements actually make up for the lack of solid gameplay.. although not by much. Liked: It follows the movies plot. Hated: It's just bad in the game play department. :( **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: Some graphics look good. There are little cut-scenes; but the gameplay graphics are lacking. Luke looks bad in a bad way. He looks like "Kevin" from Home Alone 2... with a gun. :( His animation is really jerky too. He stutters along if you fire and run. It's just plain sad. It's too bad that graphics like that are tacked up in a game published by Nintendo and endorsed by Lucas Arts. The animation is just wrong and it blurs heavy on an old Game Boy. Liked: Umm. the close up pictures, the Game Over screen, and the little cut- scenes. The Scrolling Text! Hated: Everything else. The bland backgrounds, the jerky animation, the lack of visibility, the way Luke looks. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: Some of John Williams immortal score is here! Most excellent. Some new tunes were made for the game's main gameplay.. and those are inappropriately jazzy and ill-fitting for the game. The sound effects are back-washed from the Game Boy Color cache of sounds. Bad. Just bad. At least, the music in some places is familiar and well done. Liked: The real Star Wars music stuff. Hated: The horrible music made for the gameplay and the sound effects. :( **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: Luke gets knocked back almost half a screen when he is hit. He also can not shoot up or jump accurately. The game has "floaty" controls. And feels like a cheap attempt to cash in on Star Wars. It is an interesting game for a while; but it ultimately will collect dust. Liked: It's remotely fun sometimes. Hated: It's ill-concieved and half-hearted. **************************************************************************** Improve: Color. Focus on ONE style of Game Play. (I want a semi-3D flight game of a racer. An RPG would be nice. Just stick to one type of gameplay style and do it well.) Oh, do ONLY Star Wars tunes. No lame new music. RIYL: Frustration, Star Wars (Hardcore fans only!) **************************************************************************** Final Words: I find it's lack of solid gameplay disturbing. This game can lead to fear of the liscense. Fear leads to hate. And hate leads to suffering. Don't buy it for more than $20. Oh, well. The movies still rule, though. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: ** Graphics: *** Sound/Music: *** Play Control/Game Design: * Personal Opinion: ** Total: 11 out of 25 Final Score: 44% **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: None.
