R-Type DX Game by Nintendo Reviewed by Adrock adam@dmgice.com Size: 8 Megabits Save: Battery Released: 1999 Works with: GB and GBC **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: One of the most famous series of space shooters ever comes to the Game Boy Color. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: Ok, let's get this across first and foremost. THIS GAME IS PRETTY DAMN HARD. Think you're cool because you got all 120 stars on Super Mario 64, or you beat the first level on that "Adventures of Bayou Billy" game? Wait til you pop this sucker in. It's pretty hard. Whining 3D platform game loving, solitaire playing, Elmo 123-ers need not apply. Anyways, on to the game. The story is this... a deep space probe has found the Bydo empire, plotting to attack Earth... a full scale attack force would be too obvious, so they must rely on one ship to do everything. This would be you. Yep, you're out there all alone fighting these guys. Don't fret, though, because you've got a pretty sweet ship. Along the way you can get special beams like Fire Chain, Super Laser, and Bubble Beam. Aliens talking smack? Then you can bubble em' to death, like Sailor Mercury. You can hold B and release to do a charged beam attack. The game is actually 5 games in one, because you get R-Type (Original and Color Remix) R-Type II (Original and Color Remix) and R-Type DX, which is like a mix of the two. This is just too much action for anyone to pass up. If you love space shooters, you'll love this game. Liked: Tons of space shooting action. Lots of options. Hated: It's really hard. You'll die a lot. You gotta be really good. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: The game looks awesome, especially on a Game Boy Color. Bosses with HUGE sprite sizes. Lots of enemies onscreen. There are even some cinema sequences. Liked: Lush organic enviroments full of alien skulls and machines of mass destruction. Hated: More cinemas? Maybe some mock 3d bonus rounds in DX? **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: The music rocks hard. It is like space-suspence-thriller drama-type stuff. The sound FX are your normal bleep-bleep type stuff, but what else is there really? The sound in this game reminds me of Red Alarm for the Virtual Boy, but with no voice. Liked: Rock hard Music and FX. Hated: Voice? **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: Control remains pretty responsive throughout the game. Objects are large, thus sometimes manuevering quickly without getting crushed by the scrolling screen is tough. Liked: Solid controls, like most shooters. Hated: Play area sometimes cramped. **************************************************************************** Improve: More cinemas, voice. Either less tough, or offer more skill levels. RIYL: Gradius, Galaga/Galaxian, Defender, and gobs of other shooters that are out there. **************************************************************************** Final Words: Like space shooters? Own this game. It's perfect for you. In fact you probably won't need another shooter game for your Game Boy, ever. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: **** Graphics: ***** Sound/Music: **** Play Control/Game Design: ***** Personal Opinion: ***** Total: 23 Final Score: %92 **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes:
