Revelations: Demon Slayer Game by Atlas Reviewed by Ryno Rsonderg@online.emich.edu Size: Unknown Save: Three Save game slots Released: (What year was it released?) Works with: All Gameboys (but should be played with CGB) **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: I bought this game with very high hopes. It sounded kind of cool, although I was a little sceptical about the whole monster thing. Also, I wasn't too sure about all the bible referances, but it was clearly marked RPG, and it was by atlas, who had produced some other cool games for the play station, and ogre battle for the super nes, so I figured it had to be at least decent and worth my money. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: Game play was, for the most part, very good. It played very much like a traditional RPG in respects to Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy. The normal menus, statistics, etc. One bad thing, however, was the constant text scrolling and the excessive menus. Most RPG's allow you to go back through menus (cancel the screen) by pressing the B button, but in Revelations, you had to wait for the text to finish scrolling, or press the button several times before it closed out the screen. This became mildly annoying after a while. Also, the whole talking in battle thing got very old. All I wanted to do was kick some booty and these monsters wouldn't shut up. Liked: Traditional menus, excellent charactor development system (leveling up). Hated: Excessive menus, talking monsters, and the scrolling text. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: The graphics were awesome. Now when I first bought this game, I only had a normal gameboy, and I thought it was pretty decent. But when I recently obtained my CGB, I was amazed. The graphics are great, and the colors excellent. It makes a huge differance playing this game in color as opposed to in black and white. There weren't any graphics noticably out of the ordinary, and they flowed together pretty well. Liked: Excellent color, nice graphics, very traditional, very cool. Hated: Black and white (not that I really hated it, I just wouldn't reccomend it) **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: The audio is actually quite good for a game boy game. It's not excellent, but it doesn't suck either. Pretty average. Good enough to set a mood, and good enough not to get annoying, but not good enough to arrange it for your local symphony. Liked: Wasn't annoying. Hated: Nothing, really. **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: The game design has both really good, and really bad points. First of all, I'd like to say I didn't buy this because it was a pokemon clone, and I thought this rpg was going to kick some ass. However, the monster collecting is what makes the game suck a little. The leveling up system is solid (in fact, awesome) and most of the items are pretty standard and well done. All Atlus needed to do was stick to its guns and JUST make an RPG, and it would have rocked, but I get the feeling that they went with the popular flow and threw in monster colecting to be cool. If the game didn't have this element in it, it would have been much better off. Liked: The level up system. Hated: The monster system. **************************************************************************** Improve: If they put out a sequel, all they have to do is make it a straight rpg instead of all the popular hype. If they gave you a few characters who you could level up and build up as you chose with this system, and cut the monster crap, this game would rock. RIYL: Final fantasy legend series. **************************************************************************** Final Words: This game isn't a bad rpg. In fact, I've gotten through a lot of it without even getting any monsters. All you have to do is up your stamina to get more hp, and some of your intellegence to get mp early on, and once you get your three charactors, you should be ok. The talking during battle gets annoying, but if your into that sort of thing, then I guess this is a decent game. You can try to play this as a straight up rpg, and you'll get pretty far, but eventually, you'll have to break down and do some monster collecting. If your looking for a goodrpg for your game boy, this can be a decent one, but I wouldn't make it your #1 pick. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: **** 4 stars Graphics: ***** 5 stars Sound/Music: **** 4 stars Play Control/Game Design: **** 4 stars Personal Opinion: **** 4 stars Total: 21 stars Final Score: 84%
