Rainbow Six Game by Red Storm Reviewed by Gamefan Size: 8 megabits Save: Battery Backup (One Slot) Released: April 2000 Works with: Gameboy Color exclusive **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: I really didn’t know what to think about Rainbow Six, but I seen the graphics on the web and read all the bad reviews. Something told me I would like Rainbow Six. Read on to find out if my gut instinct was right. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Description: The replay is this game is endless, because you can always try to plan the missions differently. I like to plan the mission so that no one is killed. (This is very hard) Its is fun, but don’t except to pick this game up and start a mission within the first 10 minutes (it won’t happen) This game is designed for a older gamer like myself (22) and I find is challenging to plan and exercise a mission. Liked: Challenging planning missions and mission coordination. Hated: Characters get caught on walls at times. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: The Graphics are overall very good. The characters are well detailed and the environments are well designed. The lighting is right on, and the menus are awesome. The only part of the graphics I didn’t like is walking up and down on the catwalk it makes the catwalk blink/flash. Liked: Menus, In mission Graphics. Hated: Walking up and down on catwalk. There aren’t any cut scenes like Bionic Commando. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: The Music is pretty good actually, despite the bad remarks of other reviews, it doesn’t detract from the game and keeps the suspense up. Guns firing are kind of weak, but are overall pretty good. Liked: Good music is suspenseful. Hated: Music never changes (in game) and no digital voice like Bionic Commando "Elite Forces" **************************************************************************** Play Control: The Control is really good, you have the option to walk (stealth is better with "Normal" setting) Run, (most used to speed up the game) and Sniper mode witch is mainly pointless (the screen zooms out and shows you the surrounding area with a increased range on your crosshair.) because you get yourself killed. The characters sometimes get caught on walls and stuff, but they appear to get turned around. (Which is acceptable to me, being that it’s a swat team in a strange place.) Game Design: Red Storm really toke there time making this game and it shows, its toke me about a day or two to understand all the options and team commands. You can control 4 teams of 8 people maximum. There is a planning feature which lets you plan out the whole mission on a blue print or satellite image. This allows you to command the teams to do different things within the missions. For example on the third mission I had my Red team save the Hostages, while the Blue and Green teams defused the two bombs on other levels of the complex. This ability is very cool, but takes time to learn. You can switch the team that you control at any time and choice the best route to finish the mission with the fewest casualties. Planning is the main part of the game, because it takes a few failures to be able to learn how to change the plan in mid-mission. There are even night vision goggles to help with Night missions. Liked: Mission Planning, Control of all teams and Night Vision! Hated: Having to change plans in mid-mission. Its possible, but it most likely means that you have lost some team members to terrorists which makes the mission more of a "You" controlled mission instead of a team effort. **************************************************************************** Improve: Better Sniper mode, Digital Voice, Custom Characters, make it so that the team members don’t get caught up on walls and ladders. RIYL: Nothing else like it. Planning based Stealth; not even Metal Gear does that. Metal Gear would be the closest game in play style. **************************************************************************** Final Words: I was very frustrated at first, but after a couple days I have become quite the INS agent. (Pun on the Elian Gonzales in the news) I really like this game because it is geared towards the older gamer and is unlike any other game on the system. I really enjoy this game and if you like puzzles and challenging gameplay pick this one up. I bought it used at FuncoLand for $20 and it has been worth every penny. You should be able to find a cheap copy, because of the bad reviews by game companies. This game was overhyped to an immature crowd and it will be considered a bust to the masses, but older gamers will really appreciate the effort that Red Storm put it. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: ***** Graphics: **** Sound/Music: *** Play Control/Game Design: **** Personal Opinion: **** Total: 20 of 25 stars Final Score: 80% **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: sorry.
