Rainbow Six Game by Red Storm Entertainment (Crawfish) Reviewed by BluScreen BluScreen@hotmail.com Size: 8 megabits Save: Battery Save Released: 2000 Works with: GBC Only Opening Snide Remarks: First off - I am a self declared Rainbow Six addict. I have all of the PC and console games, the keychain, a R6 jacket, and enjoy enacting CQB situations with my fellow airsofters on weekends. That being said, R6 has set a very high mark for all CQB games to meet. I really hope that this does not suck. Gameplay: All in all, this cart is R6 "Lite". The game has been scaled down from its PC counterpart for the most part intact. For those who aren't aware, R6 is a book by Tom Clancy about an elite international swat team that saves the world in one way or another. If you enjoy SWAT type gaming, you should already own this game for the PC. All the maps we came to know and love (Congo, Estate, Hot Zone, Amazon) are in here in one form or another. All of the planning and loadout screens are here as well in exacting detail. This is a tactical planner's dream. Once you've chosen your team and armed them accoring to the mission parameters, it's time to hit the ground running. The game plays smoothly as long as the cursor option is set to fast and you discover the "run" mode hidden within the keymapping. Doors open themselves as you walk by and eliminate the need for a lockpick set. Snipe mode is a nice addition although I can not really understand the purpose of it. As far as I can tell, the developer took a great deal of time trying to maintain the look and feel of the original in the pak. My largest gripe is that it's too damn easy! In the PC version, one shot kills and the tangos (bad guys) have superhuman aim. You win by sneaking around and picking the right time to shoot. In the GBC version, it's more head on and less subtle. The AI is kind of weak in that the enemies often shoot several times before even wounding your character. My feeling is that most people will feel weighed down by all the planning and may not like the title as much as those of us who are familiar with the series. If you are interested in R6, buy the PC game first and play some multiplayer - then consider the pak. Graphics: One word : Awesome! The graphics although a little small are incredible. The game even has a night vision mode for running ops at night! The original R6 maps made a nice translation to this format, and I even know where I'm going on the map based on my knowledge of the PC's maps!! Sound: Typical GBC - guns sound like guns, grenades sound like grenades. Music: Not worth mentioning - if you're familiar with the R6 and EW music that RSE put into their games, you'll be mighty disappointed here. Play Control: Control is smooth and precise once you figure out the modes available. As per RSE standard, the manual is VERY vague and the control takes about a 1/2 hour to decipher. Final Analysis: As someone who'd buy R6 cereal, I'm kind of slanted in regards to RSE's products. However, if you're in the mood for a challenging (in planning) tactical squad based game, check it out. If you're the kind of person who gets bored in the first five minutes of a slow game, pass this one by. I would very much recommend that you take a good look at the PC original and get hooked there first...
