Mega Memory Card System/accessory by Interact Reviewed by The Avardancer Released: 1999 Use with: Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color. Not compatible with normal Game BOys or the Super Game Boy device. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Opening Snide Remarks: Here's an idea. What if there was a way to insure that your precious save data in Pokémon or that awesome photo gallery in your Game Boy Camera would NEVER be gone. What if there was a way for people to share games such as Final Fantasy Legend 1, Harvest Moon, Pokémon and never have to worry about erasing over each others games? What if.. Interact seems intent on taking the "What If" and running with it. This is the first of it's breed. It's a "Hard Drive" for your Game Boy and it allows you to make a back-up copy of your games SAVE DATA. Unlike some not too legal devices that back up games; this device backs up your Game Boy's Battery Operated Memory. It's a FLASH RAM device. And here is the review. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Impressions: The device itsself is easy to use and is effective. You put it in your Game Boy Color/Pocket and turn it's ON switch to the ON position. Then attach a game with a battery pack. For an example, I'll use Revelations: The Demon Slayer by Atlus. I can hook it onto the back and select the option "Back-Up" from the menu. Then, I name the save file. I'll call it: "Dull RPG" and then I press "END" and it backs up the save data. Now, let's say.. that I "accidently" clear all the data from Revelations: The Demon Slayer by turning the power on and off rapidly. Or by selecting "Clear Game Pak Memory" in the menu. Oops. That save data inside the pak is gone. Too bad. But, for some rather sadistic reason; I want to play Revelations: The Demon Slayer and I want to use my old saved game. It's not on the Game Pak. No problem, I hook up my Mega Memory Card and the game then select "Restore Data". I then select "Dull RPG" and all my Revelations Data is back! Now, I found out after many tests, some of which require actually kicking the device down the stairs, subjecting it to various sick and demented big checks; and finally forcing it to take a written test. I will list the results of the tests in the next sections. Liked: The little bugger is durable. I dropped it down the stairs and it's fine. Not a scratch. It also contains 8 Megabits of RAM or in other words... 1 MEGABYTE of RAM. I found out that I can have a Game Shark hooked up to the game or the Mega Memory Card and the device will work right through it. I can also use a Game Boy Pocket and the Mega Memory Card to back up the save data on Game Boy Color Only games. All the games I tried worked on it. Although, from what I hear.. Pokémon Yellow and some future games have "issues" with the device. I discovered that two of the devices can be daisy-chained with out a game if you want to "back up" another Mega Memory Card. Although... why you would want to do that is beyond me. You can also hook the Game Boy Camera up to it and transfer save data from one camera or copy of a game to another copy of the same game. In other words.. why not pit your Pokémon Team against itsself. If you save your game on the Card, trade a great pokémon to a friend and then reupload your previous Save Data.. you can effectively clone pokémon without a risky game link trick. The matches of the century are brewing now thanks to this device. Data from a Blue Version of Pokémon can not be uploaded into a Red Version of Pokémon and vice versa. The device is about $20 and that's a good price. If you have ever turned on your game and found your Pokémon data.. gone. You will appreciate this device. Hated: You CAN NOT use this device on a normal Game Boy. It is physically uncompatible. And you CAN NOT use this device on a Super Game Boy. The Super Game Boy tries to read the Mega Memory Card as a game and can not display it at all. You also CAN NOT rename your saved files or delete over them automatically. The device only comes in a clear yellow right now as well. If you don't like the Yellow... tough. The device CAN NOT save data for games that use PASSWORDS or do not feature a battery-backed memory. The device boasts of "100 saves" but that isn't true if you back up devices like certain Game Boy Color games and/or the Game Boy Camera. Those have larger SAVE RAMS and can eat up more space. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Improve: The device needs to be re-released in a CHOICE of colors, it also could use the ability to rename existing save files and delete over them with an updated version of the same file.. automatically. Maybe a little more RAM is in order? I mean.. seriously.. 1 MEGABYTE? There are floppy disks with more memory and floppy disks are obsolete. Also, if there was an option that could "Game Freeze" or "store a temporary save file for games that feature no save battery". +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Final Words: Should you buy one? If you own a Game Boy Color, or a Game Boy Pocket; and you are paranoid about your herd of Pokémon or some other game like.. "R-Type DX". It is good at what it does. Although.. I wish it did more of what it does. Hopefully, Interact will release an even better version; but for now, this will do. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Score: 87% +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Secrets: None.
