Gex: Enter the Gecko Game by Crave Reviewed by Dominus wanderso@optonline.net Size: 8 megabits Save: Password Released: 1998 Works with: All gameboys **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: Gosh, when I first got a Gameboy color, Gex looked so alluring. The graphics looked so cool... Well, now I understand why Dmgice.com don't have screenshots. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: The plot, well, it's nearly nonexistant, like so many platformers. The graphics are good, but they are kinda overcolored. Some of the levels are pretty good, but most of them are just copies of previous levels. Gex goes from being incredibly hard (having to make near impossible jumps) to very easy (whack five purple mushrooms???) Gex needs some more moves, too. How about tongue lick? There is no replayablity either. The frustrating play make it impossible to enjoy playing Gex again. Liked: Nice scencery Hated: Impossible jumps, having the level reset if you die, only three energy points... **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: As said above, the graphics are great. Everything looks like you think it should, but the repetive nature of the levels makes the "reward of going to the next level" very unrewarding. The haunted castle is too monocolor also. How about more colorful ghosts? The bad guy, Rez, looks like a reject from "Alien". Liked: Wonderfully drawn graphic and sprites Hated: Everything else **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: The sound effects are annoying. Very repetive beeps and buzzes, nothing to write home about. The music seem horribly out of place for every level except the Chinese one. The music for the Cartoon level is excrusiatingly poor. A team of monkeys could have done better. Liked: Nothing Hated: Everything **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: The hit detection is really bad. You KNOW you hit something, but it won't die. Arrghhhhh! You know you're going to make that jump, but you don't! The play control will have you cursing the designers way into the night. And that password system! Who wants to write down and remember over 20 characters?!? Liked: Very little Hated: There's not much to like... **************************************************************************** Improve: Better music, less of one color and its shades for a particular level, more moves (tongue lick?), better hit detection, and for God's sake, scrap the password system! RIYL: Other poorly designed but colorful platform games, hitting yourself on the head **************************************************************************** Final Words: Well, I hear that Crave or Eidos or someone is making a new Gex game for gameboy. If its any better than this game, I might, just MIGHT, buy it. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: *** Graphics: *** Sound/Music: * Play Control/Game Design: * Personal Opinion: ** Total: 10 out of 25 Final Score: 40% **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: The Ultamite Gex password (Opens up EVERYTHING.)
