Galaga/Galaxian Game By Namco/Nintendo Review by The Avardancer Size: 4 Megabits Save: none Released: 1995 Works with: Any version of Gameboy; although Gameboy Color has problems with this game. Opening Snide Remarks: Galaga is an update to a little known game called Galaxian. And LOOK thier both on this cartridge. Galaga contained the FIRST power-up in Video Game history. And you can STILL find Galaga in the Arcade at the theatre. (I've been harrassing the theatre people to sell it to me; maybe I can convince them that's it's NOT worth $750...) Gameplay: See those aliens on the top of the screen? Blast them into Microscopic particles! The two games are similar; but they both require different strategies. You have to place your shots wisely in Galaxian; because after you fire a shot; then you can't shoot until the shot hits something. In Galaga; you can fire away; but you won't get a good shot percentage. Galaga is more fun. They are both simple kill or be killed games. Graphics: Easy to see on Gameboy and Arcade Perfect on Super Gameboy. The borders look like the actual Arcade units too. Nice touch. The Gameboy Color can make it look like the arcade as well; but there's a problem with the Gameboy Color's sound with this game. Sound: There's nothing here that is notable and some of the noises are ANNOYING! But, those sounds actually add to the experience. When you play it on Gameboy Color; those sounds cut in and out. The sounds also sound very choppy on a Gameboy Color. Then you'll notice that the game's sound actually adds to the game. Music: Galaxian has a strange Cartoony opening theme; where as Galaga has a theme that sounds like it's ripping off Star Wars. Weird. The music is fairly cool; but also is subject to choppiness in Gameboy Color Play Control: Move left, move right, any button fires. Whoa. The complexity is too much to take! Nah, the Play Control is fine. Final Analysis: This is a good little deal; and if you can get it for $20 or less you should. It's a must play on Super Gameboy to throughly enjoy it. It's even better if you have one of those Arcade Joystick Mock-up Controllers like the "Fighter Stick" from Asciiware. It feels like the arcade. And that arcade feeling is worth the money. Although, Gameboy Color owners may want to skip it and hope that it gets remade for Gameboy Color. Score Gameplay: ***** Graphics: **** Sound: ** Music: *** Play Control: ***** Total Score: 19 out of 25 Final Score 76% Currently Known Codes: Galaga Tag-Team Ship: This is the first power-up/code ever. And you should already know this one; but if you don't here goes. When one of those big ugly ships in Galaga comes down and shoots a triangle beam; if you have at least 1 extra ship; get hit by the beam. Your fighter will be captured; BUT that's part of the code. When the alien that captured your ship swoops down, shoot that alien! (Don't hit the ship.) If you kill the Alien that the ship is trailing behind; you'll get that ship back and be able to shoot double shots.
