Ghousts and Goblins Game by Capcom Reviewed by The Avardancer (Philip Wesley) Size: 8 megabits Save: Password Released: 2000 Works with: Any version of Game Boy **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: Listen ye to a story of the Knights of the Round. Of Bold King Arthur, and his Noble Quest to free Guinivere from the grasp of Evil. Listen to his exploits of heroics, mighty infinite weapons and red underwear. Or don't. I could live off of NES ports. I mean it. Give me a portable Super Mario Bros. 3 and I can die happy. Portable Dragon Warrior 1 & 2? Like Heaven. This is a straight NES port distributed by Capcom and developed by Digital Eclipse. And this is my review of the game. **************************************************************************** Gameplay Descripion: It's really just a platform game. You jump around from platform to platform throwing spears/knives/etc. at enemies. There are "bosses" and six levels of play. What makes this platformer stand out from the crowd? Three things. It has a horror theme. It's hard. AND when you get hit you lose your suit of armor and run around in your .red underwear. That alone is politically incorrect enough to be cool. And the game is pretty cool. Although it has particularly nasty surprise when you you beat it. The game is fun; but hard. It's tough. Yes... it is. The passwords are like the NES version, and while passwords could be a "pain" to some people; in this game I don't mind. I wish it saved my high score though. If it had a battery to save scores; but NOT save your game.... I would be thrilled. It has a continue feature; and I like that. There are a lot of instances where you miss a ledge by a pixel and die. Funny enough, that difficulty makes this game more fun. It may frustrate some players; but I love it. Some people may be turned away by the challenge; but those who stay will be gld that they did. Liked: Fun and challenging. Hated: Pansy whiners who can't stomache hard games. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: It looks almost exactly like the NES version. Well, aside from the smaller viewing area and lower resolution. Okay, aside from being a little closer to the action, this one is pixel-perfect. The graphics are deep and colorful. Not a bad deal at all. I did notice some slight flickering on the sprites when larger enemies were around. I noticed that the game contains a "blood-like" effect for when enemies die. It's interesting to note as it's supposed to be blood; and you rarely see that these days in an "E" rated game. Liked: It look good. Hated: A slight flicker. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: The music and sounds are intact and it sounds good. The music doesn't get annoying; but you can turn it off if you're not crazy about it. It sounds great. Especially with headphones. The average sounds of an NES game. Not bad at all. Liked: Not annoying. Hated: Not a thing really. **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: This is an NES port; but it is a well-designed game to begin with. The play control responsive enough. The game does have that nasty frustration factor to it for novice players. If you're kinda bad at video games in general; this is going to rub that fact in your face. Liked: Good design, play control, and challenge. Hated: Too hard for you? Maybe? It has no extra stuff like "Super Mario Bros. Deluxe" **************************************************************************** Improve: Not a thing; just do Super Ghouls and Ghosts for Game Boy Advanced RIYL: Action games, challenge. **************************************************************************** Final Words: Did you love this on the NES? Do you like hard games? Then buy this. It's cool. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: ***** Graphics: **** Sound/Music: **** Play Control/Game Design: **** Personal Opinion: ***** Total: 22 out of 25 Final Score: 88% **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: The codes are level specific for each player and situation. So I won't put any here. Beat it yoursef. :P
