Burai Fighter Deluxe Game by Kaga Electronics Reviewed by Samus dave.thorne@ntlworld.com Size:512 kilobits Save:Password Released:1991 Works with all GameBoys Opening Snide Remarks:I've never been a big fan of shoot 'em ups of any kind but when I saw Burai Fighter Deluxe in a second hand shop for next to nothing, I thought 'What the hey!' and decided to buy it not knowing exactly what I'd let myself in for. Gameplay:This is a simple shooter where you move around various landscapes blasting anything that gets in your way.Unlike normal horizontally scrolling shoot 'em ups,Burai Fighter incorporates vertically scrolling sections into the game and changes the speed and direction of the person who you control from time to time.Apart from your basic gun,you can obtain various other weapon power-ups like lasers, missiles and a ring which releases gunfire in every direction by shooting the appropriate symbol. The main game is alright but it's not really much different from regular shooters. There is also a Vs mode in Burai Fighter but you will probably tire of it very fast as it is not very exciting. Graphics:The graphics are clear and easy to see whether you play on the GameBoy or GameBoy Color. All the enemies you face have nicely detailed sprites and there has obviously been some work put into the end of level bosses as you can see scales and bumps on the skin of the monsters quite well. However the backgrounds are dull and fail to give you the impression that you're in outer space. Sound:The sound effects are pretty bad really. There is just a simple bleep when you fire your gun and when you collect a power up there is a weird warping noise. There is nothing here that you haven't heard before although maybe not quite as bad as this. Before long, you'll be wishing there was an option which allowed you to turn off the SFX all together. Music:The music is quite good in my opinion. All the tunes are very catchy and after a while you'll find yourself humming a few of them! The variety of songs is very different for each stage of the game-my personal fave is the one for the opening stage. Play Control:The controls in the game are basic which isn't a problem as it means you can easily pick up and play Burai Fighter Deluxe without having to constantly refer to the instruction manual. It's simply B to shoot and the D-pad to move. Final Analysis:Burai Fighter Deluxe is a nice shoot 'em up that whilst not managing to be amazing, isn't that bad either.Unfortunately, there isn't much here that sets it apart from other games but what it does,it does well. I've had the game for a while now and I still come back to it from time to time for a quick go.Buy it if you can pick it up cheap.
