Battletoads Game by RARE/Tradewest Reviewed by Rapidfire rapidfire45@kmfms.com Size: 2 Megabits Save: nothing Released: 1991 Works with: All gameboys/ made for B&W Game Boy Opening Snide Remarks: Well, the Nintendo game was fun, and a N64 version will kick ass, but since Rare seems to have moved on from super badass amphibian mode to supercute mammal mode, I wouldn't count on it. This game is pretty common, and I picked it up a couple years back at Funcoland for $14. Gameplay: The gameplay can be described in only one fashion: The designers of Double Dragon must of been doing something, anything when they made this. It is double dragon, but with more design, wacky animation, and, at the end of a series of punches or kicks, you get a super gigantic body part shooting the enemy off the screen. So far, the game doesn't stray from the original that much, except you can only play as one of the toads. Graphics: Well, for a game that was made to ride the coattails of Ninja Turtles, the graphics are pretty sweet, especially when you are riding that hover-cycle thing. When the speed of travel increases, though, it does blur on an original game boy. I haven't been able to try this one out on my Color Game Boy, but I'd imagine it would be less blurry. Other than that, all the animation was done great on your toad. The other enemies, especially when you beat them up, do move in a choppy fashion. Backgrounds are great as are the title screen and everything else. Sound: Take Double Dragon's sound effects, and them put them in a blender with some sound effects from Looney Toons, hit frappe! It does get the job done though! Music: The music in this game is above average, following the Double Dragon style of fighting music. Excellent job at making non-annoying music(What the hell happened while making Banjo-Kazooie, though?) Play Control: In VERY rare occasions, you will hit jump and your character will not respond. In the hover-cycle level, it kinda turns into a reflex game as you avoid lasers. You will die because you forgot to hit the direction pad, you will blame the controls, but it will probably be your own fault. Final Analysis: I think this is a decent game if you find it for about 10 dollars or less. It is hard, though, and especially tricky that hover-cycle be! If they wanted to, Rare could package Battletoads, Battletoads in Ragnoak World, Double Dragon, and Battletoads and Double Dragon together as one big Color Game Boy game and people will buy it. Even just the two Battletoad games would be nice. But this game screams for color!
