    October 2002 The Pocketeer..
AGB Games, best known as "Those people
who make really damn good looking things" has become an official GB Development
team and that's good. They are called The Pocketeers now. Old news.. yes?
Oh, well. tired I am.. -PAW/10/31/2002-
Stomping on Tokyo.
Game Boy Advance continues to destroy
bits of Tokyo and the competition. Although, the surrounding prefectures
aren't safe from it's wrath either. Anyhow, the latest data from Japan covers
the week of October 7th to October 13th and the two best selling systems
are the GBA and the PS2. The PS2 owns a good... 39.33% of the market there.
GBA owned... 39.46% of the market! YAY! That 0.13% makes me happy!
Well.. in comparison.. the XBox only owns 4.75% of the market and the Game
Cube owns 10.40%. Once Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicle comes out.. expect
that number to go up. Oh, yeah! But for now.. GBA OWNS JAPAN. BWA HA HA! -PAW/10/24/2002-
THQ + Forbes = 69.
That makes no sense;
but umm.. here you go. According to Forbes annual list of the 200 Best Small
Companies of 2002, THQ is #69 on that list. THQ is the company that publishes
countless Nickelodeon themed GBA games, as well as owning US publishing and
distribution rights for Sega and Microsoft games on GBA. Congratulations
to THQ and may they continue to be prosperous and successful in the future.
Now to end this article before I remember that it's THQ I'm talking about.
hehehe -PAW/10/22/2002-
Is it... Snake?
Hideo Kojima said that he was working
on developing a Game Boy Advance game in an interview with Famitsu Magazine.
(Darn Miyashu Newspaper! Vegetable men... I swear.) Personally, I want a
sequel to Snatchers or at least a really good Metal Gear game. But, consiadering
that Kojima-kun (hehe) is a man with a passion for making girly men star
in his games, the new title will probably be about Raiden's life on the run
for killing the president after that ending in Metal Gear Solid 2. I mean..
the president touched Raiden in a no no spot as Raiden has pointed out for
us on a doll. Best not to bring up that trauma. Anyhow, new Metal Gear? Would
be nice. Have a link
to something.. -PAW 10/17/2002-
Get your motors running..
Wanna rock and roll all night and
shoot people all day? Instead of moving to Washington DC, pick up Rock and
Roll Racing and Blackthrone from Blizzard's new bag: "Blizzard Arcade Classics"
and be satisfied in a way that only something cold and refreshing can. Blizzard
is indeed.. cold and refreshing. Rock and Roll Racing is an old Super Nintendo
port of a racing game that uses an engine similar to RC Pro Am and features
liscensed songs in midi form. Songs like "Born to be wild" and more of that
1970s to 1980's rock goodness. Blackthrone is Prince of Persia with guns.
Yup. They are expected to open fire next year. -PAW/10/16/2002-
Guess they can't use Puppy Power?
What's fuzzy, has lots
of energy, likes to go into holes, and drives all the Japanese girls crazy?
Well, Hamtaro of course! What else? He He He Guess what! In Japan on December
14th, 2002.. Hamtaro gets his first movie. Yup, a Hamtaro movie. If you stopped
reading after that last sentence, you're a disgrace to humans and Ham Hams
everywhere. Okay, here's the plot. It's Laura's birthday and Hamtaro is depressed.
He can't wish her a happy birthday; because hamsters don't speak human languages.
(They can understand it; but can't speak it. For that, a lot of people should
be grateful.) So, he asks a fairy hamster (that turns into a human girl with
hamster ears) for help and she transports him into Ham Ham Land (featured
in the video games and OVAs no less) and tells him about a magic sunflower
seed that, if eaten, would allow people and hamsters to communicate. Problem
is that an evil Devil Ham who can change into a Devil Dragon is also after
the seed and want to use it for evil intent in an evil manner. So, Hamtaro
and his buddies must search the world of Ham Ham Land, and brave the perils
of such things as Ninja Hamsters, the afore-mentioned Devil Ham, and the
underground hamster music scene to get to the seed. No. Really. DJ Hamsters,
man.. DJ HAMSTERS. Also appearing in the movie is a pop group called the
Mini-Mini Hams. (Voiced by a popular pop group in Japan that I couldn't translate
the name of) Anyhow, there's adventure, fighting, music, and even a little
romance as Hamtaro and Bijou are together at this point in the timeline.
YAY! Will Hamtaro be able to find the magic seed, so he can speak like a
human? Will 4Kids and Cartoon Network have a fit over the villian being called
Devil Ham? Will we even see what looks like an over-all fun little movie
in the USA? Most likely yes. Expect the Hamtaro movie in the Fall of 2003.
Hey, people pay to go watch Veggie Tales.. why not Hamtaro? Besides.. NINJA HAMSTERS. C'mon.. that's interesting. -PAW/10/11/2002-
Celebii's Bogus Journey.
Dude! Like a most
excellent fourth Pokemon movie comes out in like righteous movie theatres
today! Go and see it, man! It's the prettiest of the four movies so far,
and if you do see it.. you get an E-READER card featuring Celebii that you
can use with your e-reader, groovy happening cats! So, see the best Pokemon
movie and be hooked up with a FREE E-Card, man! That's like.. excellent!
Celebii can like travel through time and stuff because he's like happening,
dude. Movie contains no Reeves person in it, so be ye glad, dudes and righteous
babe dudettes! Just think! The movie will kill less brain cells than this
article did, so why not go? You get a free card and you get to partake in
some niceness Japanese animated fun. Also, Mirimax usually doesn't cut anything
from Japanese animated movies. For those of us who aren't in Junior High
still.. be brave and just go ahead and see the movie. Okay? It's not Spirited Away
; but it is a lot less heavy-handed and besides.. Misty, Brock, and Team
Rocket are in it. They're always fun. Actually, from what I have gathered,
it probably won't get a lot of people in to see it. Seeing as reviewers right
now are a lot that calls anything Japanese animated.. bad, too violent, or
too much of a fad. Spirited Away has managed to avoid that stigmata;
because it's got awards to back it up. However, a few reviewers have swept
it into a pile of their own crap; because -as we all know- movie critics
are asses who wouldn't know a good movie if it shot them in the head. (Which
is why crap like A Beautiful Mind wins awards and something truly original ala Fight Club gets snubbed. Remember these people hated Girl Interrupted. How smart can they be?) I noticed a lot of the same reviewers praising the Powerpuff Girls
movie for it's violence are snubbing PK4 for it's violence. That's just
dumb. Also, I found a lot of the reviews seem to aim more at the franchise,
without mentioning the film itsself. If you're sick of Mega Man, shut up
and let those of us who like Mega Man have our Mega Man in peace. Same goes
for Pokemon. It's also directed by the guy behind Kimigure Orange Road: Summer's Beginning. So, anime fans have NO EXCUSE not to support the director. A lot of the voice actors were in Now and Then, Here and There and Utena. Anyhow, it's out.. here's a good review
of it and I think that pretty much sums it up. -PAW/10/11/2002-
Succubus in my pocket.
Capcom announced Super Puzzle Fighter Turbo for
Game Boy Advance and well... it's Columns with Darkstalker/Street Fighter/Etc
characters. Hence, the reference to Morgan from Darkstalkers. So, it comes
out next year. Be happy! -PAW/10/10/2002-
You'll break.
David.. would you like
to see your mother? Oh.. forget the crappy A.I. reference. Nyko has announced
a "strategic alliance" with United Internet Technologies, which used to be
called United Leisure Corp, for work on PS2 and GBA technologies that have
to do with the internet. Essentially, what they are known for is DIVO and
a technology called iCIT. What iCIT does is make "Super Toy" type plush toys.
Think like Teddy Ruxpin but with a higher IQ than you. For some people that's
not hard. Their other bag is connecting odd devices to the internet, WAN,
LAN, or wireless networks. So, it's probably....... we'll see. -PAW/10/10/2002-
Smoking some Rumor Weed.
Yes. That's a Veggietales reference. Bite me. Anywho,
a rumor going around the web is that Nintendo will announce a new Game Boy
unit at the end of the week which will feature two more buttons, a backlit
screen with a flip-down screen cover, more RAM in the ARM CPU (What, 8k not
enough for you?), more bits, a built-in lithium-ion battery for ten hours
of play (Yuck. Use a RAM battery instead), and a price of about $80. Well,
It's a rumor. What can be said? Other than that ever since the GBA came out,
people have been talking about replacing it. So, here's some salt, take it
as you will. -PAW/10/10/2002-
Shrek means TERROR in other languages.
Shrek: Hassle in the Castle
is unleashed upon the world this week. Thought you needed a warning. I read
through the press releases that state that the game is a "third person" adventure
with three playable characters, a coin grabbing four player mode, and a plot
that mirrors the movie. It's developed by Japanese developer Tosse. I actually
played this thing to get a pair of Shrek ears at E3. It's a little like Toki Ape Spit, if you remember that old arcade game. It's the best of the three Game Boy Shrek games; but.. that's not exactly a compliment. Well, just so you know. I hate slow news days.. -PAW/10/09/2002-
Nintendo doesn't care about the children!
Oh, no. Nintendo thinks
only of themselves! Think on this latest outrage! They've announced an advertisement
budget of $140 Million (Millllllllion!) for this Christmas season! That's
25% more than last year! (See why they lowered their "earnings" estimates!)
Anyhow, instead of feeding, educating, and arming poor UNICEF poster children
who will most likely grow up to be terrorists.. they will use this money
to give US the following USELESS THINGS!
1. Exclusive Nintendo Cube Clubs in urban storefronts in 15 cities, featuring live music and extensive hands-on game play.
2. A celebrity-studded anniversary party for Nintendo GameCube in Hollywood.
3. Intensified advertising campaigns
aimed at teens and young adults highlighting a wide range of older-appeal
titles from Nintendo and independent third-party publishers.
4. More than 3 million promotional DVDs with 80-plus minutes of game footage representing more than 25 new games.
5. Cinema advertising in Nov. and Dec. on more than 6000 screens nationwide.
6. Sponsorship of the USSA Snowboarding Grand Prix, running from December through April.
7. Promotional partnerships with Heineken, Keebler and Kraft Easy Mac & Cheese.
8. Multi-market radio promotions.
9. Intensified internet and print advertising.
10. 1.5 million copies of a new 80-page, full color consumer booklet at thousands of retail outlets in November.
11. Numerous out-of-home programs - in schools,
malls, college campuses, airports, bars and nightclubs - reaching teens and
young adults where they hang out.
In other words: You will see Nintendo's flashy Metroid Prime commercial before Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, as well as the romantic comedy with a light twist known only as: Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Tumbling down.. tumbling down!) among other movies destined to be a hit, such as Bowling for Columbine.
(Right.) Anyhow, instead of feeding the little Bin Ladens of the world,
Nintendo instead intends to give us some neat-o promotions and PROMO DVDS!!!!!
YES! I mean.. NO! Think of the Terrorist Children Nintendo! They'll never
grow up to be pilots without the money that UNICEF can give them! Instead....
use that money to support UNICEF! Not for making our Christmas a safe and
happy one! -PAW/10/08/2002-
Jazz:
Nintendo only appeals to kids? Nintendo doesn't appeal to kids. People will
never be happy. Nintendo is the little company that could. They're small
fry compared to Sony and Microsoft, and they've been the only company that's
been able to remain standing in their shadows. Here's hoping that Metroid
whoops Halo's ass.
Philip: Halo is the name I shall give this Llama I stole.. umm.. found. Good Halo! No! Halo! Run! Samus has the whip again!
Hball: I HAAAAAAAAVE NOOOOOO CUUUUUBE! (With all apologies to Hiorns and Hetzel.)
Cleaning out the closet!
Well, Jazz Jackrabbit has FINALLY come out of the closet from being
a long talked about Game Boy Color game to being a Game Boy Advanced work
in progress. Blast some bad guys with the Once and Future Prince with a Thousand
Enemies. A Cookie to you if you get the reference. Otherwise, nothing in
the warren will save you from the wrath. Also coming out of the Game Boy
Limbo Closet is the ambigously joyful trio of The Lost Vikings! Help our threesome of husky, Nordic men achieve their goals by using their goods, funny accents, and talents! -PAW/10/08/2002-
Hbomb: I'm sorry, all I could think of was that Icebox
where Bridget thought Jazz was a Pokemon.
Philip: Gasp! You're fired for not making a joke! I'm throwing you to the husky Nordic men!
Sock Monkey sits there silently thinking Sock Monkey thoughts.
Slooooooow News.
All quiet on the western front! Oh,
so you Yu Gi Oh fans know.. there's going to be Yu Gi Of Mighty Kids Meals
after the Lego promotion which is starting this week at McDonalds. Just thought
you would like to know. A group called Apex designs is porting the Amiga
game Payback to GBA. That sounds nice. Payback is a little like the first
Grand Theft Auto..Hopefully
the news will pick up. For now.. look at the other side of the page. Okay?
Below is nothingness designed to keep the look remotely consistant. -PAW/10/02/2002-
