THE MOMENT AFTER
By: Fulgore (aka The Boinker) 2000

On some planet, in some sea, a man is remembering his past, slowly, and surely.

 "Where am I...."

Ocean surrounds our hero for kilometers on all sides. Scenes slowly flash back to him. His greatest enemies... shadows in a time beyond their own. A world that was forgotten...

 "Koholint...."

Then beyond the shadows the memories flood. Instruments, the Wind Fish. The cursed sleeper that was responsible for all this. The mountains came back, as did the forests, and the sea. The cursed sea, that now surrounds him. A sea of a different color.

Then, slowly groping over the driftwood, metal is felt. The man slowly picks it up with all of his drained might. A shield, a symbol.

 "Hyrule...."

The shield is turned over, their are scratches on the back of it. They are not scratches, they are letters!

 "Link...."

Slowly turning over, the pain of the wreck gripping him, Link turns over to look at the sky. A single seagull flies overhead. Then the memories come back at a harsh pace.

 "MARIN!"

The shock throws Link into the ocean, and the shield weights him down. All at gripping speeds come back. Her fair face, her innocence. A love like no other. Gone, forever. A love that he had missed the chance to express, and now her silver voice would be gone.

Like a seagull in the sky that flies without reason, so was his life.

Link raised to the surface and held on to the driftwood once more. investigating himself more he found a sack from the old world. His blade, the trusty boomerang, a potion. Link remembering it's purpose quickly guzzled it down trying to regain his strength.

Then, probing further into his tools, he found the ocarina. Link wept, for Marin and for everyone else. For a love that could have been anything, he had to play one last time. Link whispered under his breath.

 "Marin...."

And as the music began to fill the air, everything seemed to fade away. Her joyful smile and her beautiful pure soul. The pieces of wreckage ceased to exist. And then slowly the sky and ocean were gone too. All that was left was Link.

The Ocarina music stopped. Link, blinking back tears, held the instrument to his heart and he began to disappear. The last thing that faded out, was the Ocarina, still teaming with Link's heart and soul. . . .

"LINK!"

"MARIN! Finally you awake, I was so worried!"

"I'm just glad to know you're safe", Marin said looking at Link, relieved.

"Me? Why was I in danger. That fever of yours scared us all, you've been in a coma for over a month," Then everything was clear to her.

"Oh Link. I had a horrible dream. A most horrible dream. I dreamt you came from another world. I saw how much you mean to me. To loose you, it was horrible. And in my dream, you lost me, and..." Tears erupted from Marin's eyes as her and Link embraced. She wondered. Maybe Koholint was real, and maybe Hyrule was the dream. Or maybe all dreams are their own reality.
